
Mataking is situated to the north of Mabul Island, Mataking is about 3 times the size of Sipadan and is only a 40 minutes boat ride away from the town of Semporna on mainland Sabah. It is one of the latest additions on the diving map of Sabah and is fast becoming a divers heaven due to its largely unexplored diving sites which are rich with varieties of marine life. If you are lucky whale shark are also commonly sighted.
Life on land in Mataking is equally as interesting. Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles occasionally come up to lay eggs on island sandy shores. Coconut crabs can also be seen scurrying up a tree. If you prefer bird's eye view of Mataking, climb up the King's watchtower and enjoy the breathtaking sights.
Getting There
By-flight - AirAsia operate daily direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau Airport. Alternatively, you can choose Malaysia Airlines which fly from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and then get a connecting flight to Tawau.
Once at Tawau, you can hire a taxi to get to the coastal town of Sempurna, which usually takes about 1 hour, followed by a 40 minute speedboat ride to Pulau Mataking.
