Layang Layang is located 300km to the northwest of Kota Kinabalu. It is one of the deepest areas of the South China Sea. The name of the island denote the notion of isolation, adventure, walls dropping to a astounding depth of 2000 metres. Pelagic species enmasse from schooling hammerhead sharks to serene manta rays can be easily sighted around the island.
Diving Layang Layang is best from March to October but can be year round, although the general perception is that diving during the northeast monsoon is an absolute no-no. Weather patterns in the past years, however, suggest that even during this much-disliked period, diving is entirely feasible and thoroughly enjoyable. Visibility and sea quality may be less than perfect on certain days but usually last only a few hours.
